Module 11: 10 Steps to Start a New Business

Rachele December 13, 2023

In this module, we will go over some of the important aspects of starting your auto detailing business, from naming and logo design, to marketing ideas.

Choosing a Business Name

Choosing the right name is one of the most important steps when starting a business. It is the first thing that the customers notice, and you want to leave a great first impression.

Ideally, your business name should be able to communicate to the customers what it’s all about. Try to come up with names that include words associated with the auto industry.

Your business name should stand out from the others but avoid making it hard to pronounce and/or spell. Your business reputation will spread thanks to word-of-mouth from your loyal customers, so make sure they can easily remember your business name.

Down the line, when you want to expand your business, you might think about trademarking your name. Before committing to a name, make sure that it can be trademarked, and isn’t already being used by someone.

Your business name should ideally include the service you offer. Having ‘auto detailing’ in the name communicates to the customer right away the services you offer.

Lastly, you will be using social media a lot to promote your business. Check some of the platforms you will be using to make sure that your chosen business name is available as a user handle.

The same goes for the business website. Try to come up with a name that has an available web domain.

Business Structure

The business structure is an important thing to consider in order to legally create and register your business.

There are many options out there for the structure of your business, including creating an LLC or S Corp.

To officially register your business, you should first speak to a public accountant, or an attorney, to find out what the rules and procedures are for setting up a business in your area.

Each country and state has different requirements for registering and starting a business. Regulations may require you to obtain numerous licenses.

Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping is an essential part of starting and owning a business, and its importance shouldn’t be underestimated.

To have a successful business, you must keep track of all your finances. It is important for you to know how much you spend on products, maintenance, salaries, etc.

Having good bookkeeping practices makes doing business so much easier. It will also give you a clear overview of where your money is coming from and where it’s going. This will help you identify any areas where you might need improvement.

Making a Business Plan

No matter your past experience in auto detailing or any business, it is crucial that you have a clear business plan in place before jumping into opening your first auto detailing shop.

A business plan can help you navigate your tasks, plan your expansion as a company, and create milestones. A business plan should ideally include market analysis, financial expectations, plans on customer care, and much more.

Market Analysis and Competition

A strong business plan includes an analysis of the market in which you will be operating. With thorough research, you can set prices for the services you provide and determine the best value you can offer to your customers.

Analyzing the market can also help you identify some of the niche markets you can take up at your location.

When researching competition in your area, you can focus on different aspects. Firstly, look into the services your competitors provide, what their price range is, and how good their customer care is.

By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors, you will already be a step ahead of them, as you can make sure you improve upon the areas where they are lacking.

Building a Client Base

While making a business plan, you also have to think about all the ways you will attract (and more importantly, keep) new customers.

There are different ways you can gain new clients, including promoting your business on the billboards around town, in newspapers, or the internet.

But by far the most successful method is having satisfied customers who will recommend your service to their peers.

Your business plan should also include any strategies you might have for upselling. Many car owners have a good idea of what is best for their vehicles and know exactly what they’re after.

But there are countless others who might need some advice from you on the products and services you offer. The key to upselling is being transparent about the qualities of your service and products.

For example, you might have low-cost and expensive wax in your shop. Giving a customer clear information on the longevity and quality of the products will help them make a decision for themselves, often opting for the better alternative.

Setting Prices

Setting prices can be tricky as there are many factors that come into play when determining the price list for your services.

Some of the things to consider in your business plan when talking about price-setting strategy are the price points of your competitors, the expenses your shop has (bills, mortgage, salaries, products, etc.), and the value that the customers will be willing to pay.

If your shop will be situated in a low-income neighborhood, it is less likely that you will have to detail luxury vehicles. And to have a loyal customer base, your costs should be reasonable.

Taking into account all these factors should help you determine the prices.

Opening a Business Bank Account

Opening a bank account is a crucial step in launching a new business. The bank you are already familiar with and already use is an excellent place to start.

If the bank where you hold your personal account provides good customer service and you have been satisfied with their service, it is likely that their business bank accounts will meet your needs as well.

You should also examine the fees of maintaining a business account. Many banks impose monthly fees to keep an account, so before committing to one bank, it’s a good idea to find out what the expenses will be.

Finally, consider your location. Making sure a bank branch is nearby can make your life a lot easier, so you don’t have to travel far from your business to deal with banking.

Business Leases and Locations

Choosing a location for your future business can be quite challenging. Ideally, you want to find a place where there’s not a lot of competition nearby, making it easier for you to gain and keep new customers.

Depending on the size of your business, the number of employees you intend to hire, and the services you intend to provide to customers, you will have varying requirements in terms of location and property size.

Ideally, you want to find a place that is affordable and within your budget, and is already designed for the services you plan to provide.

You might find a property you absolutely love in a great location, but it might not have the necessary qualities to become an auto detailing shop. In this case, you will have to do renovating, which will add a lot of costs to your start-up expenses.

If you plan on leasing a place, make sure you have a contract with your landlord, with very clear language of what you can and can’t do to the property. This will guarantee you have all your needs met with the place.

Taxes, Permits, and Licenses

To establish an auto detailing business, you will need to secure a variety of permits and licenses. Furthermore, as most businesses are obliged to by law, you will most likely be obligated to collect sales tax on the services you provide.

Once again, the types of licenses and permits needed for your business will vary drastically based on your location.

Make sure to thoroughly research the local requirements for starting a detailing business, and which permits you’re going to need.

Getting such permits and certificates can be a tedious task, so make sure you start gathering all the necessary documents well in advance.

This will guarantee that you can start your business as soon as you get everything set up, so you don’t wait on additional permits with everything ready to be running.

Business Stationary

Running a detailing business will require you to perform a lot of tasks “backstage.” While you will be detailing cars, you have to also keep things running in terms of necessary bookkeeping and paperwork.

Dedicating a separate office space inside your shop to such activities can be very beneficial to keep your business running smoothly.

Depending on what you will be doing with your office space, you will need various stationery items, such as printers, paper, and other miscellaneous office supplies.

Testimonials

Marketing your newly opened business is very important to get customers to come in. Being a newly established business, it can be challenging to get testimonials from customers.

To get testimonials and reviews, you can offer your early customers a small discount or a complimentary service in exchange for their honest reviews.

Once you have several testimonials, you can publish them on your website, or ask your customers to review your business on social media or other platforms, such as search engines.

Branded Materials

Creating branded items is a great way to show your customers your appreciation. There are many things that cost a little but can go a long way in gaining the loyalty and support of a customer.

Having branded items can help your brand recognition. The first step is creating a good logo for your business.

You should keep your logo relatively simple and easy to recognize. Ideally, it should also convey that you are a car detailing business.

Once you have a logo, you can create everything from branded pens, pencils, t-shirts, mugs and so much more.

Being an auto detailing business, you can include gifts with your service that are related to cars, such as cheeky bumper stickers with your brand name, or car air fresheners that customers will associate with your business.

Finally, make sure that your staff all have business cards they can give to the customers. Knowing they can reach out to you creates a sense of individual connection between your workers and the customer.

Online Advertising

Online advertising has become one of the most popular ways to get the word on your business out there.

When starting a business, you have to think about your online presence, and create social media channels on several platforms.

You can use social media to directly engage with your customers, share stories with them and create a friendly environment for them.

Building a presence online can be done without much expenditure. You can include links to your social media pages on a business card, banners, or other more traditional advertisements.

However, boosting your pages or posts on social media, and paying for online advertising, will accelerate the process of establishing a solid online presence for your business.

Building Word-of-Mouth Advertising

Word-of-mouth is how people have found out about businesses for decades. There is a good reason that it has stuck around even in the age of advertising.

There are many studies illustrating that people are more likely to trust a business if it gets recommended to them by a family member or a friend.

Cultivating word-of-mouth advertising can be very beneficial for your auto detailing business. It will get attention, attract new customers, and once you show them your excellent service, they will come back.

You can even set up a referral program to encourage customers to recommend your company to others. If a customer walks in and tells you that a former customer suggested your establishment to them, you can give them both a small discount on your service.

A referral program can motivate your customers to spread the word about your company.

Brand Recognition

Brand recognition has become one of the main targets for any business, old or new. Brands that have high brand recognition have more trust from consumers, and customers are more likely to use the services.

Some of the strategies and suggestions outlined in this unit aim at achieving brand recognition, such as creating a memorable name and logo, providing branded gifts to your customers, and encouraging them to recommend your business.

To establish outstanding brand recognition, you must give excellent customer service that your clients will remember and tell their friends about.

It can’t happen overnight, but if you work hard to spread the word about your business, you will slowly build up a good reputation and brand recognition.

Signage and Marquees

Signage and marquees in front of your business are a great way to use the space you already have for advertising.

You shouldn’t spare resources to create the best sign for your storefront. It has to show off the best qualities of your business name and logo, and be easily recognizable for anyone passing by.

Additionally, once you start getting customers, you can put up before and after posters detailing the job you have done in your shop.

It can be a powerful visual cue for newcomers on the excellent level of service they can expect from your business.

Choosing Employees

Choosing the right employee can make or break your business. Especially in auto detailing, you have to make sure that the people you hire have the necessary experience and skillset for the services you plan to provide.

Additionally, your employees have to be trustworthy and kind. Most of the time, they will be in direct contact with the customers, so you want to make sure that all your employees are polite and pleasant to everyone that comes into the shop.

When choosing employees for your business, keep in mind that you’re building a team of people that will work with you towards your goals.

Treating your employees well and providing adequate wages can go a long way in business. When all your employees are happy to work for you, it affects the quality of their labor, and in turn, guarantees your success.

Insurance Requirements

When running a detailing business, you have to have several types of insurances. Firstly, you must insure the property that you will be operating for any damage.

Furthermore, for businesses in the auto industry, insurance providers frequently offer a specialized service known as Garagekeepers Legal Liability insurance.

This protects any automobiles in your temporary possession while performing detailing services against damage caused by fire, theft, and other factors.

Insuring your valuable equipment is also a good idea. Vacuums, pressure washers, and other specialized equipment are not cheap, therefore, you want to make sure they are properly protected from any damage or theft.

You might also be legally required to provide your employees with insurance in case of injuries they might sustain while being at the place of work.

Be sure to go over all these different types of insurances with your insurance agent and see which company can provide them for the cheapest price point.

Options to Start or Take Over a Business

To get started in the business, you have several options: starting a business, buying a franchise, or buying an established business.

You can build your own company, choose your own name, logo, location, employees, and everything else. This is the most difficult path to pursue, but it can yield excellent results.

When you’re in charge of building a business, you will be able to choose the quality of the equipment you will use, as well as the people you will recruit, among other crucial decisions.

However, being in charge of everything might be daunting for many people. In this case, you can buy a franchise of a well-known, established auto detailing brand.

However, if you decide on this, you will have to adhere to certain standards and might even be limited in the services you can provide, and products and equipment you can use. In exchange, you gain brand recognition from the very beginning.

Finally, you can opt to purchase an already established business. In this case, you will overtake everything from the previous owner, including the equipment and staff.

Initially, you will have a little less control over the equipment, the quality of the service, and other factors, but slowly you can adjust these to fit your business interests.

Ultimately, the decision is yours to make, depending on which factors are the most important for you.
